Mental health conditions affect one in five American adults in any given year, yet the average delay between symptom onset and treatment is 11 years. Quality mental health treatment can transform lives — reducing symptoms, restoring function, and building resilience. The challenge is finding the right level of care with qualified providers.

Our directory includes 7,410 mental health treatment facilities evaluated across clinical quality, staff credentials, evidence-based practices, and patient outcomes. From outpatient therapy to residential programs, we help you find the right match for your clinical needs.

Conditions treated

Mental health treatment centers address a wide range of conditions: major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), borderline personality disorder, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating), schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, dissociative disorders, and co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions (dual diagnosis). Specialized programs exist for each of these conditions, and the most effective treatment matches the clinical approach to the specific diagnosis.

When to seek intensive treatment

Outpatient therapy is the starting point for most mental health conditions. Consider stepping up to intensive treatment when outpatient therapy and medication have not produced adequate improvement, symptoms are severely impairing daily functioning, you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm, you need medication stabilization that requires close monitoring, or co-occurring conditions complicate outpatient care. Residential mental health treatment provides 24/7 therapeutic support with daily individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, and structured programming.

Evidence-based treatment approaches

Quality mental health programs use treatment modalities with strong research support: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, anxiety, and many other conditions. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional dysregulation and borderline personality disorder. EMDR for trauma and PTSD. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. Family-Based Treatment for adolescent eating disorders. Medication management with psychiatrists who specialize in complex cases. Ask any program you are considering which evidence-based modalities they use and whether their therapists have specific training in those approaches.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go to rehab for mental health, not just addiction?
Yes. Residential and intensive treatment programs exist specifically for depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and other mental health conditions.
How long is residential mental health treatment?
Residential stays typically range from 30-90 days. PHP runs 4-6 weeks. IOP runs 8-12 weeks. The right duration depends on symptom severity and treatment response.
Does insurance cover mental health treatment?
Yes. Under the Mental Health Parity Act, insurance must cover mental health treatment at the same level as medical treatment, including residential care when clinically indicated.
What is the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist?
Therapists provide talk therapy (CBT, DBT, etc.). Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medications. Many patients benefit from both. Comprehensive programs offer integrated therapy and psychiatric care.
