Detox centers: What to know before choosing a facility
Medical detox is the critical first step for people physically dependent on alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and certain other substances. It is not treatment itself — it is the medically supervised process of safely clearing substances from the body so that treatment can begin.
When medical detox is necessary
Detox is medically necessary when physical dependence has developed. Signs include: withdrawal symptoms when not using (tremors, sweating, nausea, anxiety, seizure risk), daily or near-daily use for extended periods, and previous withdrawal complications. For alcohol and benzodiazepines, withdrawal can be life-threatening — never attempt to stop these substances abruptly without medical supervision.
What to look for in a detox facility
A safe detox center should have a physician or medical director on-site or on-call 24/7, adequate nursing staff ratios, clear medication protocols for withdrawal management, and a transition plan to continuing treatment after detox is complete. Detox timelines by substance
Alcohol: 5-7 days. Opioids/fentanyl: 5-14 days. Benzodiazepines: 2-4 weeks (requires gradual taper). Stimulants: 3-5 days physically. These are general timelines — individual experiences vary based on duration of use, amounts used, and overall health.
