Why family involvement matters

Research consistently shows that family involvement in treatment improves outcomes. Addiction affects the entire family system, and recovery requires the system to change, not just the individual.

Types

Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT): most studied, addresses relationship dynamics and substance use simultaneously. CRAFT: teaches family members techniques to motivate treatment-seeking. Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT): designed for adolescents. Family systems therapy: addresses family roles and communication patterns.

What to expect

Sessions include the person in treatment and key family members. Topics include communication patterns, boundaries, enabling behaviors, rebuilding trust, and family roles during active addiction.

When it starts

Family programming typically begins 1-2 weeks into residential treatment. Outpatient family therapy can begin at any time.
