Your first day is the hardest. Everything is new. But by the end of day one, the anticipation that was worse than reality begins to fade.

Arrival and intake (2-4 hours)

Greeted by admissions staff. Vitals taken. Belongings checked. Medical history reviewed. Urine drug screen. Psychiatric evaluation. Treatment team assignment. Room assignment. Orientation tour.

First afternoon

Meet your therapist and primary counselor. Attend your first group (usually just observing). Eat your first meal with other residents. Begin to learn the schedule and expectations.

First evening

Evening programming or recovery meeting. Free time to settle in. Phone call home (if permitted). Processing the enormity of what you have done.

What it feels like

Scared, relieved, overwhelmed, hopeful, exhausted. All of these simultaneously. This is normal. Everyone in the building has been where you are.
