Cannabis has the most misunderstood detection window of any commonly used substance, and the confusion comes from a real pharmacological quirk: THC is fat-soluble. Unlike alcohol, which your body clears in hours, or cocaine, which is gone from urine in a few days, THC's metabolites dissolve into body fat and leak back into your bloodstream slowly over days or weeks. That means the honest answer to how long weed stays in your system is: it depends enormously on how often you use, and the range runs from about three days to more than three months.

Urine testing (the most common)

Urine tests detect THC-COOH, the metabolite your liver produces as it breaks down THC, and it's the standard for employment, probation, and treatment-program testing. The windows scale sharply with use frequency: a single, one-time use is typically detectable for about 3 days; occasional use (up to three times weekly) for 5 to 7 days; daily use for 10 to 15 days; and heavy chronic use, multiple times daily for months or years, for 30 days or more, with documented cases exceeding 90 days in very heavy long-term users with higher body fat. The standard screening cutoff is 50 ng/mL, with confirmation testing at 15 ng/mL, which is why a screen can be negative while a confirmation test still detects use.

Blood testing

Active THC itself leaves blood quickly: for occasional users, roughly 12 to 24 hours; for chronic heavy users, THC can remain detectable for several days and in extreme cases up to a week, because stored THC keeps re-entering circulation from fat tissue. Blood tests are used mainly in accident investigations and DUI cases precisely because they come closest to measuring recent impairment rather than past use, though the correlation between blood THC levels and actual impairment is scientifically messy, a fact currently complicating cannabis-DUI law in every legal state.

Saliva testing

Oral fluid tests detect THC for roughly 24 to 72 hours in most users, longer at the margins for heavy daily users. They're increasingly popular for roadside and workplace testing because collection is observed and hard to adulterate, and the shorter window means a positive result better reflects recent use.

Hair testing

Hair follicle tests use a 1.5-inch sample to look back approximately 90 days. They detect the pattern of repeated use rather than single episodes, one-time use frequently doesn't register, and they cannot tell whether use happened last week or two months ago. Hair testing is used mostly in child-custody cases, some federal and safety-sensitive employment, and legal proceedings.

Why frequency matters more than anything else

The fat-solubility mechanic deserves a plain explanation because it drives everything. When you use cannabis occasionally, your body metabolizes and excretes most of the THC within days. When you use daily, intake outpaces clearance, and THC accumulates in fat tissue the way water fills a bathtub faster than the drain empties it. After you stop, that reservoir keeps draining into your bloodstream for weeks, which is why a daily user who quits can test positive a month later while their once-a-month friend cleared in three days. What actually speeds clearance, and what doesn't

The internet is dense with clearance myths, and most fail basic pharmacology. Detox drinks and flushing with water dilute urine, which labs detect via creatinine and specific-gravity checks, a diluted sample is typically flagged and retested, not passed. Exercise burns fat and can transiently raise blood THC levels as stored metabolites release, and there's no evidence it meaningfully shortens the total window. Saunas excrete negligible THC through sweat. Commercial detox kits have no peer-reviewed support. The only variables with real effect are time and, going forward, frequency: the window is set primarily by how much THC your fat tissue stored before you stopped. Detection windows compared: how cannabis stacks up against other substances

Context makes the cannabis numbers make sense. Alcohol clears urine in 12 to 48 hours on standard tests (up to 80 hours on EtG tests designed to catch metabolites). Cocaine is typically gone from urine in 2 to 4 days. Methamphetamine, 2 to 5 days. Heroin and most short-acting opioids, 2 to 4 days. Benzodiazepines range widely, 3 days for short-acting types to 4-plus weeks for long-acting ones like diazepam in chronic users. Where the test comes from changes what a positive means. DOT-regulated positions, trucking, aviation, rail, follow federal law regardless of state legality: cannabis remains disqualifying, medical cards do not protect you, and a positive triggers the federal return-to-duty process. Frequently asked questions

Can secondhand smoke make me test positive?
Under realistic conditions, no. Studies exposing non-users to heavy secondhand smoke in unventilated rooms produced positives only at extreme exposure levels rarely encountered in real life, and standard cutoffs (50 ng/mL urine) are set specifically to exclude passive exposure.
Do edibles stay in your system longer than smoking?
The detection window is similar, but edibles produce more of the 11-hydroxy-THC metabolite and absorb more slowly, which can modestly extend the tail end of detection for the same dose. Frequency of use still dominates every other factor.
Does CBD show up on a drug test?
