How long does it take to detox from alcohol?
Alcohol detox duration depends on drinking severity, history of withdrawal, and individual health factors.
Mild withdrawal
Duration: 3-5 days. Symptoms: anxiety, insomnia, tremors, sweating. Usually manageable with monitoring and comfort measures. Medical supervision recommended but outpatient may be appropriate.
Moderate withdrawal
Duration: 5-7 days. Symptoms: intensified anxiety, tremors, elevated vital signs, possible hallucinations. Medical detox recommended. Benzodiazepine protocol likely needed.
Severe withdrawal / DTs
Duration: 7-14 days. Symptoms: delirium, seizures, severe autonomic instability. ICU-level care may be needed. Mortality risk without treatment.
