Step 1: Determine the right level

Do you need medical detox? Is residential necessary or can outpatient work? Consider addiction severity, home environment stability, previous treatment history, and co-occurring conditions.

Step 2: Verify quality markers

State licensing (mandatory). Accreditation (CARF or Joint Commission). Licensed clinical staff. Evidence-based therapies. MAT availability. Individualized treatment planning.

Step 3: Check logistics

Insurance acceptance and out-of-pocket costs. Location (near home or away). Wait time for admission. Program length. Family involvement options. Aftercare planning.

Step 4: Ask the right questions

What is your clinical philosophy? Staff credentials? Daily schedule? How do you handle co-occurring conditions? What aftercare do you provide? Do you track outcomes?

Step 5: Trust your gut

Visit if possible. Talk to alumni if available. A program that feels right matters. You need to be comfortable enough to do the hard work of recovery.
