Reviewed for accuracy by licensed clinical professionals.
Oral fluid (saliva) testing is growing in popularity due to ease of collection, difficulty adulterating, and ability to detect very recent use.
How it works
A swab is placed between the lower cheek and gum for 2-5 minutes. The sample is sent to a laboratory for immunoassay and confirmatory testing.
Detection windows
THC: 24-72 hours. Cocaine: 24-48 hours. Opioids: 24-48 hours. Amphetamines: 24-48 hours. Benzodiazepines: 24-48 hours. Alcohol: up to 12 hours. Detection windows are shorter than urine for most substances.
When mouth swab tests are used
Post-accident workplace testing (detects current impairment better than urine). Roadside testing by law enforcement. Random workplace testing. Treatment monitoring.
