OCD and addiction share compulsive behavior patterns and overlapping neurobiology. Approximately 25% of people with OCD also have a substance use disorder.

The connection

Substances temporarily relieve OCD anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Compulsive substance use mirrors OCD compulsive patterns. Both involve disrupted reward and habit circuits.

Treatment

SSRIs (first-line for OCD) are non-addictive and treat both conditions. ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) is the gold standard behavioral treatment for OCD. Integrated treatment addressing both simultaneously.
