PTSD and trauma therapy in Orange County
Trauma changes the brain. PTSD is not weakness or an inability to get over it. It is a measurable neurological condition where the brain's threat detection system remains activated long after the threat has passed. Flashbacks, hypervigilance, nightmares, emotional numbness, and avoidance are not choices. They are symptoms of an injury that responds to specific, evidence-based treatments available throughout Orange County.
Types of trauma treated in OC
Combat and military trauma (OC's proximity to military installations means a significant veteran population). Sexual assault and abuse. Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Domestic violence. First responder trauma (law enforcement, fire, EMS). Medical trauma. Accident survivors. Natural disaster survivors. Community violence. Each type may require different therapeutic approaches and different provider expertise.
Evidence-based trauma treatments
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements) while processing traumatic memories, allowing the brain to reprocess trauma without the emotional overwhelm that typically accompanies recall. Sessions typically run 60-90 minutes. Most people see significant improvement within 6-12 sessions. EMDR has the strongest evidence base for single-incident trauma and strong evidence for complex trauma. Multiple EMDR-trained therapists practice in OC, though training quality varies. Look for EMDRIA-certified therapists.
CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy)
CPT is a structured 12-session protocol that identifies and challenges the distorted beliefs that trauma creates (the world is completely dangerous, I am permanently damaged, it was my fault). CPT has excellent evidence, particularly for military-related PTSD. It is structured, time-limited, and highly effective.
Prolonged Exposure (PE)
PE gradually exposes you to trauma-related memories and situations in a safe therapeutic environment, reducing the avoidance and emotional reactivity that maintain PTSD. It is evidence-based but requires a therapist skilled in managing the temporary distress that exposure produces.
Finding the right trauma therapist in OC
Not every therapist who lists trauma as a specialty has specialized trauma training. Ask specifically: What trauma-specific training have you completed? Which evidence-based protocol do you use (EMDR, CPT, PE)? How many PTSD patients have you treated? Are you EMDRIA certified (for EMDR providers)? A trauma therapist should be able to name their method. If they say I use an eclectic approach to trauma without naming a specific protocol, keep looking.
For trauma co-occurring with substance use, dual-diagnosis treatment is essential. Treating one without the other typically results in relapse. Search our directory for OC dual-diagnosis programs.
