Many people in recovery find spiritual growth essential without identifying with organized religion. The two are not synonymous.

Secular spirituality

Connection to nature. Awe and wonder at existence. Deep human connection. Service and contribution. Mindfulness and meditation. Gratitude practice. Meaning and purpose beyond self.

In 12-step context

Higher Power as the group conscience, nature, good orderly direction, or simply the recognition that individual willpower is insufficient. Secular AA meetings exist. The concept adapts to any belief system.

Other frameworks

Buddhist recovery approaches (Refuge Recovery, Recovery Dharma). Secular Organizations for Sobriety. SMART Recovery (explicitly non-spiritual). Stoic philosophy applied to recovery.
