How to tell your boss about rehab: Scripts and legal protections
You have decided to get help. Now you need to navigate the workplace. Here are the practical steps and scripts the Reddit community and HR professionals recommend.
What to say (and what not to)
Say: I need to take medical leave for a health condition. I have been advised by my doctor that I need inpatient treatment. When can we discuss the FMLA process? Do not say: the specific diagnosis (you are not required to disclose), details about your substance use, anything that could be used against you. You are requesting medical leave, which is your legal right. The less detail, the better.
The EAP shortcut
Many employers offer Employee Assistance Programs that provide free, confidential assessment and referral. EAP is often the easiest pathway because: the EAP counselor helps you navigate the leave process, everything is confidential (even from your employer), they can arrange treatment and handle insurance verification, they provide documentation for your leave request. Ask HR about EAP before disclosing anything about your situation.
The FMLA process
Step 1: Request FMLA paperwork from HR (you do not need to explain why). Step 2: Have your treating physician complete the medical certification form. Step 3: Submit the form to HR. Step 4: Your leave is approved for up to 12 weeks. Step 5: Go to treatment. Your job is protected. You return to your position or equivalent.
What the community says about coming back
Most people who take medical leave for treatment return to their jobs without incident. Colleagues rarely ask probing questions. If asked, I had a medical situation that required treatment is sufficient. The community's strongest message: do not let the workplace conversation prevent you from getting help. The conversation takes 10 minutes. Treatment saves your life.
