Birthdays in recovery can trigger complicated emotions. They can also be some of the most meaningful celebrations when approached intentionally.

Planning

Choose an activity, not a venue. Birthday dinners at restaurants work fine if you have a plan. Consider non-bar activities: bowling, escape rooms, cooking parties, outdoor adventures, game nights.

Dealing with pressure

Some friends may pressure you to drink for your birthday. Your birthday, your rules. Have your non-alcoholic drink ready. A simple celebration with recovery friends may feel more meaningful than a large party.

Sobriety birthdays

Many people in recovery celebrate their sobriety anniversary as a second birthday. Recovery meetings celebrate milestone anniversaries with chips or coins. These celebrations honor the work of staying sober.

Making it meaningful

Reflect on where you were versus where you are. Write yourself a letter. Celebrate with people who support your recovery. The best birthday gift is another year of life and presence.
