Binge drinking (4+ drinks for women, 5+ for men in 2 hours) is responsible for more than half of alcohol-related deaths.
Strategies
Set firm limits before going out. Alternate with water. Eat beforehand. Avoid shots and drinking games. Leave when you hit your limit. Track actual consumption.
When moderation fails
If you consistently exceed planned limits, binge drinking may be AUD. Naltrexone can reduce the urge to keep drinking once you start.
Frequently asked questions
Is binge drinking alcoholism?
Not always, but inability to stop once starting is a diagnostic criterion for AUD.
How do I stop?
Set limits before drinking, alternate with water, eat, avoid triggers, track consumption. If these fail, seek evaluation.
Is binge drinking worse than daily?
Both are harmful differently. Binging produces acute risks; daily produces chronic damage.
