Thanksgiving combines family stress, drinking culture, emotional triggers, and disrupted routine into one of the hardest days in recovery.

Before dinner

Attend a morning recovery meeting. Many groups have special Thanksgiving meetings. Eat a good breakfast. Have your non-alcoholic drink planned. Set a time limit for family gatherings if needed. Have an exit plan.

At the table

Non-alcoholic drink in hand before anyone offers wine. Volunteer to be the designated driver. Focus on food and conversation, not the bar. If asked why you are not drinking, keep it simple. Find the other non-drinkers.

Family dynamics

The same family dynamics that contributed to your addiction will be present at the table. Anticipate triggers. Have a response planned for difficult relatives. Give yourself permission to step away.

Gratitude

Recovery gives Thanksgiving genuine meaning. You are present, you are sober, and you are healing. That is worth celebrating.
