Does the VA cover private rehab? Options beyond the VA system

Many veterans prefer private treatment facilities over VA medical centers — whether for shorter wait times, specialized programming, location, or personal preference. The VA does cover treatment at private facilities under certain circumstances, though the process requires understanding VA Community Care rules.

VA Community Care: When the VA pays for private treatment

The VA MISSION Act of 2018 expanded veterans' ability to receive care from non-VA providers through the Community Care program. You may be eligible for VA-funded private treatment if the VA cannot provide the specific care you need within its system, VA wait times exceed access standards (typically 20 days for outpatient, 28 days for residential), the nearest VA facility is too far from your home (drive time standards apply), or your VA provider determines that private care is in your best clinical interest. To access Community Care, your VA provider must submit a referral and authorization. You cannot simply walk into a private facility and bill the VA.

How to initiate the process

Start by contacting your VA primary care provider or mental health team. Express your interest in residential treatment and ask about Community Care referral. If wait times are long, document this — it strengthens your case. If denied, ask for the clinical justification in writing and appeal through the VA's patient advocate office. You can also call the VA Community Care hotline at 1-877-881-7618 for guidance.

Important limitations

The private facility must be in the VA's Community Care network (not all facilities are). You need prior authorization before starting treatment — going to a non-VA facility without authorization means the VA may not pay. Co-pays may apply depending on your VA priority group and service-connected disability rating. Emergency situations have different rules — if you need immediate care and the VA is not available, seek treatment and file a claim afterward.
