What does meth look like? Identifying methamphetamine by form

Methamphetamine comes in several forms, each with a distinct appearance. Recognizing what meth looks like can help parents, partners, and friends identify use before it escalates.

Crystal meth

The most recognizable form. Crystal meth looks like small, clear or bluish-white crystals or shards — resembling broken glass or rock salt. The crystals are translucent and may have a slight shimmer. They range in size from tiny fragments to pieces several centimeters across. Crystal meth is the purest and most potent form, typically smoked in a glass pipe or dissolved for injection.

Powder meth

Powdered methamphetamine is a white, off-white, yellowish, or pinkish crystalline powder. It has a bitter taste and may be odorless or have a faint chemical smell. Powder meth can be snorted, dissolved for injection, or taken orally. It is sometimes pressed into tablets. It can resemble other powdered substances, making visual identification alone unreliable.

Meth pills

Methamphetamine is sometimes pressed into small pills, often colored (orange, green, red) and stamped with logos. These are sometimes called "yaba" and are more common in Southeast Asian communities. They can be mistaken for ecstasy or prescription medications.

Paraphernalia to watch for

Glass pipes (often with a round bulb at one end and burn marks), small plastic bags with crystal residue, cut straws or rolled dollar bills (for snorting), syringes, lighters and aluminum foil (used for smoking), and small torch lighters. If you find these items alongside behavioral changes — extended wakefulness, weight loss, skin picking, paranoia, dental deterioration — the combination strongly suggests meth use.

What to do if you find meth

If you find methamphetamine or paraphernalia, do not confront the person while they are under the influence. Wait for a sober, private moment. Express concern without accusation. Research treatment options before the conversation so you can offer a concrete next step. Read our guide to signs of meth use.
