Structure

3-5 days per week, 3-4 hours per session, typically afternoon or evening. Includes group therapy, individual therapy, psychoeducation, and sometimes psychiatric medication management.

Who it is for

Mild to moderate substance use or mental health disorders, stable living environment, stepping down from residential, or those who cannot leave work for residential care.

What makes a good IOP

Licensed and accredited, led by licensed clinicians, uses evidence-based therapies (CBT, DBT, MI), includes drug testing, provides psychiatric services, and has clear aftercare planning.

Not appropriate when

You need medical detox, your living situation is unsafe, previous outpatient has failed repeatedly, or severe co-occurring conditions need close monitoring.
