Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been saving lives for over 50 years. It remains one of the most effective treatments for severe opioid use disorder.

How it works

Methadone is a full opioid agonist that prevents withdrawal, reduces cravings, and blocks the effects of other opioids. At proper maintenance doses, it does not produce a high or impairment.

The clinic experience

Daily attendance for observed dosing initially. Counseling and drug testing included. Take-home doses earned through demonstrated stability (negative tests, attendance, employment). Earning take-homes: 1 per week after 90 days, increasing with continued stability.

Effectiveness

Reduces overdose death by 50%. Reduces illicit opioid use by 60-80%. Reduces criminal activity. Improves employment and social functioning. Cost-effective: $4-$7 societal savings per dollar spent.
