Reviewed for accuracy by licensed clinical professionals.

Nitrous oxide (whippets, nangs) is perceived as harmless but causes serious neurological damage with repeated use.

How it causes damage

Nitrous oxide inactivates vitamin B12, which is essential for nerve function. Even a single session of heavy use can deplete B12 enough to cause damage. Chronic use produces subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord.

Symptoms of nerve damage

Numbness and tingling in hands and feet. Difficulty walking. Muscle weakness. Balance problems. Cognitive impairment. These may be permanent if not treated early.

Other risks

Asphyxiation (displaces oxygen). Frostbite from pressurized gas. Falls during intoxication. Sudden cardiac death.

Frequently asked questions

Can whippets cause permanent damage?
Yes. B12 depletion from nitrous oxide can cause permanent nerve damage if not treated early with B12 supplementation.
How many whippets are dangerous?
Even a single heavy session can deplete B12. Chronic use produces progressive nerve damage.
Can nitrous oxide kill you?
Yes. Asphyxiation from oxygen displacement and sudden cardiac death both occur.
