Criteria

danger to self, danger to others, or gravely disabled due to mental illness.

Only designated professionals can initiate (police, mental health professionals, ER doctors).

During 72 hours

psychiatric evaluation, medication may be offered, patient rights maintained.

After 72 hours: release, voluntary admission, or 5250 hold (14 additional days).

Substance intoxication alone does not qualify but substance-induced psychosis can..
