How it happens

BAC continues rising 30-40 minutes after the last drink. Loss of consciousness prevents seeking help. Death from respiratory depression, aspiration, hypothermia, or cardiac arrhythmia.

Risk factors

Body weight, tolerance, speed of consumption, food, and medications. Young and inexperienced drinkers at highest risk.

Emergency response

Call 911 for anyone unconscious after drinking with slow breathing or blue skin. Recovery position. Do not give coffee. Do not leave them alone.
