Reviewed for accuracy by licensed clinical professionals.

Pure benzodiazepine overdose alone is rarely fatal in healthy adults. The danger multiplies dramatically when combined with opioids, alcohol, or other sedatives.

Xanax alone

The lethal dose is very high relative to prescribed doses. Overdose still causes dangerous sedation, respiratory depression, and coma.

With other substances

Combinations with opioids, alcohol, or other sedatives are responsible for the vast majority of benzodiazepine-related deaths. Even moderate amounts of each become lethal together.

What to do

Call 911. Recovery position. Monitor breathing. Administer naloxone if opioids may be involved. Provide rescue breathing if needed.
