CRAFT is the most effective evidence-based approach for helping families get their loved one into treatment, with 65-75% success rates.

How it works

Teaches family members specific skills to reinforce sober behavior and allow natural consequences of use. Identifies windows of readiness for treatment. Has treatment arranged and ready for when the person is willing.

Key principles

Reward sober behavior (positive reinforcement). Allow natural consequences of use (stop enabling). Communicate effectively using positive approaches. Take care of yourself. Have treatment ready for moments of willingness.

Compared to traditional intervention

Traditional confrontational interventions achieve 30-50% treatment entry. CRAFT achieves 65-75%. CRAFT also improves family member wellbeing regardless of whether the person enters treatment.
