Fentanyl test strips: How to use them and where to get them

What they are

Paper strips that detect fentanyl in a drug sample. Originally designed for urine testing, they have been adapted for checking drugs before use.

How to use them

Dissolve a small amount of the substance in water. Dip the test strip. Wait 2-5 minutes. One line = fentanyl detected. Two lines = fentanyl not detected. (Note: this is opposite of most test kits.)

Limitations

Test strips detect fentanyl but may not detect all fentanyl analogs. A negative result does not guarantee safety. Hotspots in drugs mean the tested portion may not represent the entire batch. They reduce risk but do not eliminate it.

Where to get them

Harm reduction organizations (often free). Some pharmacies. Online retailers. DanceSafe.org. Many states have legalized test strips as harm reduction tools.
