How to prepare for rehab: A checklist

Preparation reduces anxiety and ensures nothing important is missed while you focus on recovery.

Work

Submit FMLA paperwork. Notify HR of medical leave. Arrange coverage for your responsibilities. Set out-of-office messages. You do not need to disclose the reason for leave.

Family

Arrange childcare. Inform family members who need to know. Pay bills in advance or arrange auto-pay. Secure your home. Give a trusted person access to handle emergencies.

Finances

Pay rent and utilities ahead. Set up auto-pay for recurring bills. Secure important documents. Provide a trusted person financial access for emergencies. Bring small amount of cash ($20-$50).

Packing

Photo ID, insurance card. 5-7 days of comfortable clothing. Medications in original bottles. Journal and pen. Books. Toiletries (no alcohol-containing products). Closed-toe shoes.

Leave behind

Valuables and jewelry. Laptop (most programs restrict internet). Your own medications not in original bottles. Weapons.
