Before events

Decide if attending is worth the risk. Plan your exit with own transportation. Tell someone you are not drinking. Eat beforehand. Schedule recovery support before and after.

During events

Keep a non-alcoholic drink in hand. You do not owe explanations. Find other non-drinkers. Check in with your support person. Give yourself permission to leave anytime.

Family dynamics

Anticipate triggering family members or topics. Set boundaries in advance. You cannot control others, only your response.

New Years Eve

Attend sober celebrations (many recovery groups host them). Host a gathering. Low-key evening at home is perfectly valid. The most alcohol-saturated night of the year does not require your participation.
