Women's rehab in Orange County: Gender-specific treatment
Women's experience of addiction differs from men's in ways that affect treatment needs. Women progress from first use to addiction faster (telescoping), experience higher rates of trauma (60-80% of women in treatment report trauma history), and face unique barriers including childcare responsibilities, relationship dynamics, and amplified shame and stigma. Orange County has treatment programs designed specifically for these realities.
Why women-only treatment
Gender-specific programs provide safety from the predatory dynamics that can occur in mixed-gender treatment settings. Women who have experienced domestic violence, sexual trauma, or exploitation are more likely to engage fully in therapy when the environment is exclusively female. Clinical programming in women's programs addresses: trauma and PTSD with gender-informed approaches (EMDR, Seeking Safety, CPT), eating disorders that frequently co-occur with substance use in women, body image and sexuality issues, relationship patterns including codependency and domestic violence, parenting and family role rehabilitation, and hormonal and reproductive health considerations.
Programs accepting children
Childcare is the number one barrier preventing mothers from entering treatment. Some OC programs accept children, allowing mothers to remain with their children during residential treatment. The OC HCA perinatal program provides priority treatment access for pregnant women and parenting mothers, including residential treatment with children. This program is available through Medi-Cal at no cost. Call the OC Access Line at (800) 723-8641 for perinatal treatment access.
Pregnancy-specific treatment
Pregnant women with substance use disorders require specialized medical care. Opioid-dependent pregnant women should be maintained on buprenorphine or methadone (abrupt cessation can cause miscarriage or fetal distress). Alcohol and benzodiazepine detox during pregnancy requires hospital-level monitoring. OC has providers experienced in managing the complex intersection of pregnancy and addiction treatment.
