All ACA marketplace plans must cover substance abuse treatment as an essential health benefit. This is federal law.

What is covered

Medical detox. Residential treatment (with prior authorization). PHP and IOP. Outpatient therapy. MAT medications. Psychiatric services. Behavioral health is an essential health benefit that cannot be excluded.

Metal tiers

Bronze: lowest premiums, highest out-of-pocket. Silver: moderate premiums and costs. Gold: higher premiums, lower costs. Platinum: highest premiums, lowest costs. All tiers cover substance abuse treatment; the difference is cost-sharing.

If you are uninsured

Open enrollment occurs annually (typically November-January). Special enrollment may be available after qualifying life events. Medicaid expansion covers people up to 138% of poverty level.
