Ambien (zolpidem) has a short half-life of 2-3 hours, meaning it clears quickly. However, detection depends on the test used.

Detection

Urine: 24-48 hours with specialized testing. Standard drug panels do NOT detect zolpidem. Blood: 6-20 hours. Hair: up to 90 days with specialized testing.

Testing reality

Most workplace and treatment drug tests do not include Ambien. Specific Z-drug panels exist but are rarely ordered unless zolpidem abuse is suspected.

Abuse potential

Despite being classified as a non-benzodiazepine, Ambien activates GABA receptors and produces dependence with chronic use. Complex sleep behaviors (sleepwalking, sleep-driving, sleep-eating) are a unique risk.
