How long does cocaine stay in your system?

Cocaine detection times depend on the test type, how much and how often you use, and individual metabolism. Here is what the science shows for each testing method.

Detection by test type

Urine testing detects cocaine's primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine, for 2-4 days after single use. Heavy or chronic users may test positive for up to 2 weeks, as metabolites accumulate in the body with repeated use. Blood testing detects cocaine for 12-24 hours after use. Cocaine itself has a very short half-life (about 1 hour), but metabolites remain longer. Saliva testing detects cocaine for 1-2 days. Hair follicle testing can detect cocaine for up to 90 days. Like all hair tests, it may not detect very recent use (past 1-2 weeks).

Factors that affect detection time

Frequency and amount of use is the biggest factor. A single recreational use clears much faster than daily or binge use. Body fat percentage matters because benzoylecgonine is stored in fatty tissue. Liver and kidney function affect how quickly metabolites are processed and excreted. Alcohol use alongside cocaine creates cocaethylene, which has a longer half-life and extends detection windows. Hydration affects urine concentration but does not speed actual clearance.

Cocaine and alcohol together

When cocaine and alcohol are used simultaneously, the liver produces cocaethylene — a unique metabolite that is more cardiotoxic than cocaine alone and takes longer to clear. This extends detection windows and significantly increases the risk of sudden cardiac death. Read our complete guide to cocaethylene.

When detection matters for treatment

If you are entering treatment, be honest about your cocaine use regardless of whether you expect to test positive. Treatment providers need accurate information to develop your care plan safely. If you are concerned about workplace testing, the more important question may be whether your cocaine use has become a pattern that warrants professional help.

Frequently asked questions

How long is cocaine detectable in urine?
2-4 days for single use, up to 2 weeks for heavy/chronic users. The metabolite benzoylecgonine is what urine tests detect.
Does cocaine show up on a standard drug test?
Yes. Cocaine (benzoylecgonine) is included on all standard 5-panel, 10-panel, and 12-panel drug tests.
Does drinking water help clear cocaine faster?
Hydration may dilute urine concentration but does not speed up the body's actual metabolic clearance of cocaine. Diluted samples may be flagged for retesting.
