Published October 7, 2024 · 6 min read · Updated April 2026
Reviewed for accuracy by licensed clinical professionals.
MDMA has a half-life of 6-9 hours. Detection depends on test type and whether the substance was actually MDMA (many pills sold as ecstasy contain other compounds).
Detection
Urine: 2-4 days. MDMA is detected on extended amphetamine panels (may trigger positive on standard amphetamine immunoassay). Blood: 12-24 hours. Hair: up to 90 days.
Testing complications
Street ecstasy frequently contains methamphetamine, bath salts, or other compounds that may trigger different panel results. A positive amphetamine screen from MDMA use is resolved through confirmatory testing.
Factors
Body weight, liver function, hydration, and frequency of use affect clearance.
