Anabolic steroids vary widely in detection windows depending on the specific compound, with some detectable for months after last use.

Detection by type

Oral steroids (Dianabol, Anavar): 3-6 weeks. Injectable oil-based (testosterone enanthate, nandrolone): 3-18 months. Water-based (testosterone suspension): 1-3 weeks. Detection uses urine testosterone/epitestosterone ratios and specific metabolite testing.

Testing contexts

Athletic testing (WADA/USADA): comprehensive panels detecting most compounds. Workplace: standard drug panels do NOT test for steroids. Legal/forensic: specialized testing available.

Not on standard tests

Standard workplace drug panels (5, 10, 12-panel) do not include anabolic steroids. Steroid testing requires specific ordering.
