What to expect at IOP: Your first week guide

IOP provides structured treatment while you continue living at home and often working. Here is what the experience looks like.

Schedule

3-5 days per week, 3-4 hours per session. Most programs meet in the afternoon or evening to accommodate work. Sessions run from approximately 4-8pm or 5-9pm.

What you do

Group therapy (the core, 1-2 groups per session). Individual therapy (1-2 times per week). Psychoeducation (learning about addiction, coping skills, triggers). Drug testing (random, typically 2-3 times per week).

First week

Intake assessment and treatment planning. Getting to know your group. Learning program rules and expectations. Beginning to share your story. Adjusting to the schedule.

Tips

Be honest in group even when uncomfortable. Attend every session. Complete homework assignments. Build relationships with group members. Use between-session support when needed.
